Garage Museum is the new superstar of the Russian contemporary-art scene founded by art collector Dasha Zhukova and businessman Roman Abramovich. The museum has an extensive collection of Russian contemporary art from the 1950s up to the present, the only one of its kind in Russia. Garage occupies the 1960s Modernist building revamped by Rem Koolhaas in 2015 to fit exhibition galleries on two levels, a bookshop, a café, an auditorium, and a roof terrace. However, Koolhaas managed to preserve the original Soviet-era elements such as a mosaic wall, old bricks and tiles.
Apart from its permanent collection, the Garage Museum is known for hosting groundbreaking exhibitions by major international artists and presenting talented contemporary Russian artists to the world.
